Lt. Colonel Douglas (Duggie) Stewart
Stewart was educated at Rugby and RMA Sandhurst. After which he joined the Royal Scots Greys in 1933. He was a Captain in the Palestine peacekeeping forces at the outbreak of the World War Two (with 600 grey horses that was a significant force). Stewart ended the war with DSO and two military crosses. He was commander of the regiment at the age of 31 in last 6 months of World War 2, and again in 1950-1952. By then the horses had been replaced by tanks.
Stewart made his Olympic début in 1948 in the three-day event but was eliminated after his horse pulled up lame in the cross-country stage. By 1952, Stewart had switched from eventing to show jumping and at the Helsinki Olympics that year he won a gold medal in the team event and placed 14th in the individual competition.
On retiring from the Army he became a farmer near Banbury, Oxfordshire.
Lt. Colonel Douglas (Duggie) Stewart died July, 1992.
