JAMES V Stewart
King of Scotland
KING.JAMES V., born 1512.
Supposedly died of grief, 1542, after hearing of the defeat of the Scots at Solway Moss.
He married, first, 1537, Madeleine de Valois, daughter of King Francis I. of France, but she died without issue the same year.
The king married, secondly, 1538, Marie de Lorraine, daughter of Claude, Duc de Guise, and widow of Louis d´Orleans, Duc de Longueville. By her he had,
1. James Stewart, Duke of Rothsay, b. on 22nd May 1540 and d. at St. Andrews, in 1541.4
2.Arthur Stewart, b. at Stirling, in 1541 and d. eight days after his baptism.
(c) MARY , Queen of Scotland Mary, who succeeded.
The king had also several illegitimate children:-
1) Jean or Jane Stewart c. b 1533 - 1587/88 m Archibald ´brown´ Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll divorced in 1573
Her mother was Elizabeth Bethune/Beaton
2) James Stewart, Commendator of Melrose and Kelso, son of Elizabeth Shaw. Died without issue, 1557.
Arms: on Seal, 1557.-Scotland, with crozier behind shield. Another Seal shows-Scotland, debruised by a baton or ribbon (Macdonald).
3) JAMES, Earl of Moray , Earl of Moray and Mar He was the.son of Margaret Erskine, James´s favourite mistress. Prior of St Andrews, advisor and rival to his half-sister Mary, Queen of Scots, and regent for his nephew, James VI.
4)James Stewart. son of Christine Barclay.
5) Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney (1533 – 4 February 1593), son of Euphame Elphinstone, Prior and Commendator of Holyrood Abbey. Robert Stewart, Ist Earl of Orkney
6) John Stewart, Commendator of Coldingham. Lord Darnley and Prior of Coldingham (c. 1531 – November 1563), son of Elizabeth Carmichael (1514–1550). He married Jean (or Jane) Hepburn, sister and heiress of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell;
(7) Adam Stewart, Prior of the Charter House at Perth. (d. 20 June 1575), son of Lady Elizabeth Stewart, (daughter of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox).
(8) Robert Stewart, Prior of Whithorn.second son of Margaret Erskine
Arms: of King James V. same as his father. In his minority he used two unicorns as supporters, but afterwards two lions rampant.
