His death is recorded as having occurred in Ireland, in 1429, “after the arrival of a fleet from the men of
Scotland to convey him home, that he might be made king”. His wife is said to have been a daughter of MacDonald of Antrim but there is no evidence for that and his only son James is generally referred to as illegitimate, it follows that he was never married to the mother.
His issue were
1. James Stewart, 1st of Balindoran,
2. Matilda Stewart, married by 15 February 1445, to Sir William Edmonstone, 1st of Culloden and Duntreath, (he d. in 1473).
