JOHN Stewart
1st Earl of Atholl

JOHN STEWART, SIXTH LORD INNERMEATH, was created EARL OF ATHOLL 1596, after the death of his cousin JOHN, 5th Earl of Atholl , and died 1605.
Arms: on Seal, 1598.-1 and 4. A fess chequy. 2 and 3. Three pallets. CREST: A hand holding a key. SUPPORTERS: Two savages, their right legs fastened together with fetters (Macdonald).
He married Margaret Lindsay, daughter of David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford and Katherine Campbell.
In March 1596, he married, secondly, Marie Ruthven, the widow of John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl, and a friend of Anne of Denmark. She was a daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart.
a) His son was JOHN, 2nd Earl of Atholl. from his first marriage.
