ALEXANDER Stewart
Earl of Mar

ALEXANDER STEWART, son of ALEXANDER, Earl of Buchan (S.) , married 1404 Isabel, Countess of Mar and Garioch. He was in command of the Royal forces at the battle of Harlaw in 1411.
Married firstly, by 12 August 1404, to Isabel Douglas, Countess of Mar, daughter of William, 1st Earl of Douglas, (she was widow of Sir Malcolm Drummond).
He claimed the sovereignty of Holland by right of his wife Jacquet, daughter of the Earl of Holland, (she had divorced from her first husband John, Duke of Brabant, and after Alexander Stewart’s death, she m. thirdly, to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, brother to Henry V of England). They were divorced.
He was married again to Maria de Horn, from Liege, this marriage was annulled. He married thirdly, or at least
he contracted to marry Margaret de Seton, (who was then the widow of James de Dunbar), for which, on 26 January 1432, a supplication was sent to Rome for the Pope’s approval. He died soon after and was buried at Inverness on 26 July 1435. He had a number of illegitimate children -
In 1426 he was created EARL OF MAR, with remainder to his illegitimate son, Sir Thomas Stewart, who died in his father´s lifetime. The Earl died 1435.
1)Thomas Stewart, Earl of Mar. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas, (she was the widow of John Stewart,1st Earl of Buchan, and m. thirdly to William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney).
2)Robert Stewart, who, on 5 September 1419, had a Papal Dispensation to be allowed to be promoted to Holy Orders regarding of having been born illegitimate
3)James Stewart, who had a Papal Dispensation to be promoted to Holy Orders and continue in his office of Chancellor of Dunkeld
4) Walter Stewart, had a Papal Dispensation to be allowed to be promoted to Holy Orders and then became a scholar in Aberdeen.
5) David Stewart, had a Dispensation to be allowed to be promoted to Holy Orders on 4 July 1423.2
Arms: of Earl of Mar on Seal, 1406.-I and 4. A fess chequy between three ducal coronets (Stewart and Garioch combined). 2 and 3: A bend between six cross crosslets fitchy (Mar). CREST: Two serpents nowed erect, counter respecting, issuing from a coronet. SUPPORTERS: Two lions rampant guardant (Laing). And Nisbet has: 1 and 4. Gold, a fess chequy blue and silver between three red open crowns. 2 and 3. Blue, a bend between six cross crosslets fitchy gold.
