After marrying Margret Hardwick in 1932, he took on the pseudonym Michael Innes, and published crime novels and short stories. He wrote nearly fifty novels and gained critical acclaim for his tongue-and-cheek writing style. Under the same name John was also known as a frequent critic of literature and published in several critical studies. He was also praised for his biographies of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling.
He returned to lecturing from 1946-1948 at Queen´s University of Belfast. He retired in 1973 and was elected an Honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died in 1994, aged 88.
