JAMES VII. and II Stuart
King of Scotland and England

KING JAMES VII. and II., son of CHARLES I, King of Scotland and England, was born 1633, and was created DUKE OF YORK 1644, Earl of Ulster 1659, and DUKE OF ALBANY 1660
He left England 1688, afterwards went to France, and died there in 1701.
He married, first, Anne Hyde, daughter of Edward, Earl of Clarendon, and by her had
1. Charles, Duke of Cambridge, born 1660; died in infancy.
2. James Stewart, b. on 12 July 1663, was created Duke of Richmond on 23 August 1664 and d. on 20 June 1667.
3. Charles Stewart, b. on 4 July 1666, was created Duke of Kendal and d. on 22 May 1667.
4. Edgar Stewart, b. on 13 September 1667 and d. on 8 June 1671.

5. Mary, who succeeded to the Throne. MARY II, Queen of Scotland and England.
6.Anne, who succeeded to the Throne. ANNE, Queen of Scotland and England .
7. Henrietta Stewart, b. on 13 January 1668-69 and d. on 15 November 1669
8. Catherine Stewart, b. on 9 February 1670-71 and d. on 5 December 1671.
King James married, secondly, in 1673, Mary d´Este, daughter of Aiphonso, Duke of Modena (she d. at St. Germains, on 8 May 1718),, and by her had
9. Charles Stewart, b. on 7 November 1677 and d. on 12 December following.
10. James Francis Edward Stewart, (see below).
11. Catherine Laura Stewart, b. on 10 January 1674-75 and d. on 3rd October
following.
12. Isabel Stewart, b. on 28 August 1676 and d. on 2 March 1680.
13. Elizabeth Stewart, b. in 1678 and d. young
14. Charlotte Maris Stewart, b. on 15 August 1682 and d. on 6 October following.
15. Louisa Maria Teresa Stewart, b. at St. Germains, on 28 June 1692 and d. there
of small pox on 18 April 1712.
King_James_VII._and_II. also had several illegitimate children:-
with Arabella, sister of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, he was father of:
16. James Fitzjames, Duke of Berwick and Liria, who became a very able soldier and distinguished himself on a number of occasions. He accompanied his father to France where he enlisted in the King of France’s army. He was
promoted to Marshal of France, Grandee of Spain and Knight of the Golden Fleece, and was k. in 1734 in the wars between the Emperor and France. He m. firstly, to Honora, daughter of William Burke, Earl of Clanricarde, (she d.
in 1698), and secondly, to Anne, daughter of Henry Buckley, and had issue.
17. Henry Fitzjames, b. in 1673 and served in his father’s navy. He was outlawed in 1695 for adhering to his father and became Admiral of French Galleys. He m. Marie Gabrielle, d’Audibert, Comtesse de Lussan, (she survived him and
m. John Drummond, Duke of Melfort), and d. in France, in 1702, without surviving issue.
18. Henrietta Stewart, b. in 1670 and m. Henry, 1st Duke of Waldegrave. She d. in 1730, having had issue.
19. Ignatia Fitz James, became a Nun at Pontoise and d. on 7 November1704.
By Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester, he had further issue :
20. Catherine Stewart, m. firstly, in 1699, to James, Earl of Anglesea, but separated from him due to his cruelty, and secondly, in 1705, to John Sheffield, Duke of Buckinghamshire. She d. on 14 March 1743.
