CHARLES I Stuart
King of Scotland and England
KING CHARLES I., born 1600, created at his baptism DUKE OF ALBANY, Marquis of Ormond, Earl of Ross, Lord Ardmannoch and in 1605 DUKE OF YORK.
He was beheaded 1649.
In 1625 he married Henrietta Maria de Bourbon, daughter of King Henry IV. of France.
By her he had
(1) Charles, born and died 1629.
(2) Charles, who succeeded to the Throne CHARLES II, King of Scotland and England .
(3) James, who succeeded to the Throne JAMES VII. and II , King of Scotland and England .
(4) Henry, born 1640, created DUKE OF GLOUCESTER and Earl of Cambridge 1659; died, unmarried, 1660.
(5) Mary Stewart, b. on 4 November 1631 and m. on 2 May 1641, to William of Nassau, Prince of Orange, (he d. on 6 November 1650). She d. at London, on 24 December 1660 and had issue, William who succeeded as King William III. and m.on 4 November 1677, to his cousin, Mary, daughter of King James
(6) Elizabeth Stewart, b. on 28 December 1635 and d. a prisoner in Carisbrooke
Castle, on 8 September 1650.
(7) Anne Stewart, b. on 17 May 1637 and d. on 8 December 1640.
(8). Katherine Stewart, b. and d. on 20 January 1639.
(9.)Henrietta Maria Stewart, b. at Exeter, on 16 June 1644 and m. in the Chapel Royal, Paris, on 31 March 1661, to Philip, Duke of Orléans, brother to Louis XIV. King of France. She d. at St. Cloud, on 30 June 1670 having had issue.
Arms: of King Charles I. on Seal, 1624, with colours added.-1 and 4. Scotland. 2. Quarterly; first and fourth, Red, three lions passant guardant in pale gold (England); second and third, Blue, three gold fleurs-de-lis (France). 3. Blue, a gold harp, stringed silver (Ireland). SUPPORTERS: Dexter, A silver unicorn horned, waned, and crowned with imperial crown and gorged with another crown of fleurs-de-lis and crosses patty and chained gold; Sinister, A lion rampant, imperially crowned gold.
