JAMES Stewart
Earl of Moray
JAMES STEWART, son of JAMES V, King of Scotland and by Margaret, daughter of Sir John
Erskine, Earl of Mar. Born 1533/4
Commendator of St. Andrews and Pittenweem 1538. He was Regent during his sister, the Queen’s minority, and by whom he was created Earl of Moray in 1562.
On 8 February 1561/2 at Holyrood, Moray married Agnes Keith, daughter of William Keith, 4th Earl Marischal. The marriage produced three daughters:
Elizabeth Stuart, 2nd Countess of Moray (Aug 1565– 18 November 1591) m. on 23 January 1581, to Sir James Stewart, eldest son of Sir James Stewart, 1st Lord Doune, who succeeded as 2nd Earl of
Moray, (he was killed by the Earl of Huntly at his castle of Donibristle in 1592) and d. on 18 November 1591.
Lady Annabel Stuart (? – before 1572)
Lady Margaret Stuart (8 Apr 1569 – 1586) m. Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Errol, He m. secondly by c/m in January of 1587, to Mary, daughter of John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl, and thirdly, Elizabeth, daughter of William Douglas, 6th Earl of Morton. He d. at Slains, on 16 July 1631).
James Stewart,a son by Christian Barclay.
John Stewart, Prior of Coldingham, a child by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Carmichael, and had a legitimation under the Great Seal on 7 February 1551. He m. at Seton on 4 January, 1562, Jean, daughter of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell, (she m. secondly, John, Master of Caithness), d. at Inverness in 1563 and had issue,
Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, was a child by Euphemia, daughter of Alexander, 1st Lord Elphinstone, (she m. in 1540, to John Bruce, 3rd of Cultmalundy, by whom she had further issue), and was b. in 1533. He was created Earl of Orkney and Lord of Zetland by King James VI. on 28 October, 1581. He m. Jean, eldest daughter of Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassillis, d. on 4 February, 1593, and had issue.
Moray was assassinated in Linlithgow on 23 January 1570 by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, a supporter of Mary. As Moray was passing in a cavalcade in the main street below, Hamilton fatally wounded him with a carbine shot from a window of his uncle Archbishop Hamilton´s house. It was the first recorded assassination by a firearm.

Three cushions within a double tressure flory-counter flory (Moray) (Laing). I and 4. Scotland, debruised by a black ribbon. 2 and 3. (Moray) (Nisbet). CREST: A pelican feeding her young in a green nest. SUPPORTERS: Two s2Yver greyhounds, with gold collars. MOTTO: "_Solus_ per_christum_Redemptorem."
