The Lady of Kynachan - James Irvine Robertson's (1995)

This fine book is a historical novel with an added dimension. James Irvine Robertson has written a stirring account of the 1745 Jacobite Rising, using his own family's papers as the basis for his tale. All the principal turns and twists of the plot are historical facts and the main characters are real people. The personality of the 'Lady' herself, Jean Stewart, and her romantic marriage to David Stewart, laird of Kynachan (near the west end of Loch Tummel in Perthshire), shine out from the pages with a clarity and freshness seldom met with in this genre.

The author has been able to stick close to historical fact, even reproducing (sometimes in disguise), real 18-century conversations reconstructed from contemporary letters and other family papers. Altogether it is a tale of love and war, loyalty and romance, which takes some beating, set in the background of the Scottish Highlands. Indeed, the setting is not just a background; the landscape and the culture of the age enter and pervade the book like characters in themselves.

The book is a passionate and personal story of the '45, with many genuine historical and delightful details of life in the Highlands in the 18th century.
