NETHER LOCHABER MONUMENT - Corran, nr. Onich, Inverness-shire

Stewart Society & Journal

Monument to the Stewart Society's founding President (1899)

Lochaber_Monument

Erected to the memory of The Rev. Dr. Alexander Stewart, known as "Nether Lochaber". It dominates the beautiful little graveyard a few hundred yards north of the eastern pier of the Corran Ferry. It was first put up at another sight a few miles further south, near Onich Post Office but was moved to the graveyard to make way for road improvements.

"Nether Lochaber" was a most remarkable man, Minister of his parish of Ballachulish and Onich for some 50 years until his death in 1900. He was much loved by all who knew him. He was a Gaelic speaker, author, naturalist and antiquary with an amazing breadth of knowledge matched by his all-embracing love of mankind in general and his parishioners in particular.

The monument is maintained periodically by the Society, as and when it needs attention. In 2000 it underwent a major overhaul to correct the slight tilt which had developed and the opportunity was taken to clean it at the same time, so that the inscription is now much easier to read.
