ARE YOU AN ATHOLL STEWART?

[Crossmount]

In 1822, Colonel David Stewart of Garth published his book Sketches of the Character, Manners, and Present State of the Highlanders of Scotland etc. In it he states there were some 4,000 descendants of the Wolf of Badenoch resident in Atholl.

In the old Gaelic culture, people had their genealogy at their fingertips and knew precisely from which line of Stewarts they descended. Since this information was transmitted orally, today it has often been forgotten. In 1817 and 1818 David Stewart asked ministers, schoolmasters, and antiquarians to compile lists of the names of these Atholl Stewarts, estate by estate, and to ascertain their lines of descent.

At its best the name of each individual is given together with his age, his wife, his children, the township on which he lives, and the lairdıs family from which he descends. These families came down from the Wolf, King James II, the old earls of Atholl etc. Some respondents misunderstood the question and replied only with the names of their fathers, a few did not know, and, on Bohespic, Janet and Christian Stewart are described as

"two_ladies_of_the_Tinkerıs_Tribe_&_Col_Stewart_is_at_liberty_to_attach_them_to_any_family_he_chooses"

However, through these lists, anyone today who knows the name of a Stewart ancestor resident in Atholl in the early nineteenth century has a reasonable chance of discovering their original Stewart progenitor. Bear in mind that the spellings of the townships may vary from the modern usage so your eyes rath may be of more use than the search facility on your computer.
