Douglas John Moray Stuart, 20th Earl of Moray
1928- 2011
Douglas spent the first seven years of his life by the banks of Linpopo River before going off to school in Johannesburg. In 1943 while at Hilton College, Natal, he learned of the sudden and unexpected death of his uncle Francis the 18th earl of Moray at Darnaway Castle, the family home in Scotland. In the absence of a male heir Archibald was now the 19th earl and Douglas assumed the Moray courtesy title Lord Doune.
After his arrival from Africa he soon grew to love the land of his ancestors. In 1947, he went up to Trinity College Cambridge to read History; he followed this by studying estate management at Circencester. This placed him in good stead for his role as Director and Chair of Moray Estates Development company. He guided the company through a period of great change and encouraged the company to diversify.
In 1974, on the death of his father, Doune became the 20th earl of Moray. It was at this period in his life that he developed his other great passion, the collecting of contemporary Scottish art. He took great pleasure in meeting and getting know young and established artists and commissioning work from them. He was also passionate about motor racing and pre-war sports cars, a passion that resulted in the founding of the Doune Hill Climb in 1968 and what became the Doune Motor Museum two years later. The Museum is now closed but the Hill Climb remains popular and ir organised by the Lothian Car Club.
In 1964, Doune married Lady Malvina Murray, daughter of Mungo, 7th earl of Mansfield. They had a son, John and a daughter, Louisa. John Stuart succeeded his father as the 21st earl of Moray.
