Canadian seeks Stewart relatives. My grandfather, Victor Lorne Stewart of Toronto, passed away a few years ago and I have been consumed with an interest in my hertiage. He was born on Dec 13, 1909 in South Mountain, Ontario (near Ottawa). His father, James or John Hall Stewart was possibly born in 1884. His mother (my grandmother) was Sarah (Sadie) Mahon or Merton and she was born in 1884? in Wakefield, Quebec.

Any help, and leads would be appreciated. jaysonjstewart@yahoo.ca

I thought I would add a little more to my earlier message re my Stewart research in Alvah, Forglen, Rathven & Turriff.
My great grandfather Alexander Cruickshank Stewart was bapt 1840 in Turriff, only child of William Stewart b 1815 [parents William Stewart b 1785 Alvah, & Jean Cruickshank] & Jean Paterson.
William remarried in 1848 to Helen Grant after his wife died; they had 2 daughters Mary & Frances. I do not know anything of Mary & Frances except that family stories were that they were brought out to Australia by Alexander but after a short time they returned to Scotland as found the climate in Oz not suitable.
Alexander emigrated to Australia in 1870, married in 1873 and raised his family in Orange, Wellington area of New South Wales; he was a telegraph linesman.
The parents of William Stewart born 1785 were James Stewart b 1755 Alvah,& Susannah Stewart.
Would be delighted to hear from anyone with connections or info on any of the above Stewarts, thank you....Joan

Researching our ancestor, Susanna Stewart. She was born approximately 1742 and died in 1830 at the age of 88. Her age at death is stated on her gravestone. She died in Guernsey County, Ohio where she had emigrated with her son, Hans Weaver and daughter-in-law, Susannah Cleland. Susannah's husband was Robert Weaver of Killyleagh, County Down, Ireland but he had apparently passed away by the time that Susannah came over.
Would like to connect with anyone who has more information about Susanna and her family.

Hi To All,

I am trying to find information on Daniel L. Stewart, born October 12, 1852, in Antrim County, Ireland. I have much info on his family under him, from the time he came to the states. But NOTHING before this. I can not even find his parents names.

Daniel L. Stewart would be my g-grandfather. He married Flora Eliza Sinclair. They had 7 children:
John D.
James Archibald
William Patrick
Flora Margaret
Cornelius
Alvin Defendant
Joseph

I had a family member that stayed in touch with the family in Ireland, but has passed away. Her name was Anita Pickett. No one in the family since, has any knowledge of the family in Ireland.

If anyone could offer any information on Daniel L. Stewart, I would greatly appreciate any help.

Looking for information regarding our family linkage. Originally the family name was Levack from France, moving to Scotland during the late 1700's, became part of the Livingston clan. Further research indicates the Levack name listed under the Stewart (Adrie) clan. Our greatgrandparents were William Levack and his wife Jessie (Janet-nee Bernard). They lived in Portobello in a row of houses known as the Twelve Apostles. Jessie was a second or third cousin of the Dewrar family. Any information on the clans and or related people would be appreciated. Thankyou

Happy New Year to all Stewarts!!
My gggGrandfather settled near Cobourg, Ontario in the mid 1800's. However my family has no information on him or his family prior to hi immigration to Canada, other than that he was an accountant in Edinburgh.
I am very hopeful that someone out there might be able to flesh out a bit of the family Tree for me. His name was GEORGE STEWART born in 1818 (Maybe Edinburgh?) and married to JESSIE JANET ****INSON born in Scotland in 1819. They had nine children; George, Margaret, James, Jessie, Jane, John, Georgina, Mary, and Catherine. I am from the descent of the son John. Information I have on the other siblings is also scarce - I know that Magaret married a Wilgur and have that descent, and i know that Jessie married a Doyle and that their daughter was Senator Iva Fallis, Canada's second female Senator.
Anyone who can give me any more information on any of these names would recieve my sincere gra***ude.
Thanks all,

My Stewart ancestors come from Atholl House, Dingwall, Rosshire and Balnaloch (spelling?)Black Isle, Cromarty according to a letter written by my great-great-aunt.

Isabella Stewart married John Munro by 1843, her mother was descended from the Stewarts of Atholl House, Dingwall, where her sister Mary kept house for three bachelor uncles descendants of a former Provost Donald Stewart. Her brother Colin Stewart was a missionary.

Isabella's father descended from farmers and land owners from the Black Isle, Cromarty. In 1934 a relative of this branch of the family, Tom Stewart, brother of Jeanie aged 94, was a banker in Australia. Another relative the Rev. Charles Stewart married a sister of the missionary Rev. William Islay Burns. The Rev. John Macdonald preached at a New York church Syracuse.

If any of these names or places coincide with your own research please do get in touch.

I am descended from several branches of STEWARTS (STUARTS) back in Scotland. However, I can't place my closest one, Veronica STEWART, m. Thomas HENDERSON abt/ 1765, St. Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh. Her dau., Elizabeth m. William HARPER abt 1765. Elizabeth was b. 1766, Edinburgh, and the HARPERS then moved to Dalgety, Fife, across the Firth of Forth. William was gardener for Francis STEWART, Earl of Moray, and they lived in his home of Donibristle. I wonder if Veronica was related to Francis, as when William d., Francis took care of all of his children. He got the oldest son, John, into the R.E., where he d. a Lt. Col., and he made sure the others were educated and had land. Does anyone know anything about Francis or Veronica? Since Veronica is an unusual name for STEEWARTS, I hope someone will have come across her. She's my 6th ggrandmother.

I am a Stewart by marriage and have been researching my father-in-law's family. I have discovered his grandfather James McLean was born in Dunkeld Perthshire 18.4.1958 the illegitimate son of Catherine McLean. By the age of 2 James McLean had become James Stewart and lived with his McLean Grandparents in Dunkeld. James McLean Stewart married twice and on his first marriage in 1878 to Annie Kay he stated his father was James Stewart - Mason deceased and his mother as Catherine McLean afterwards married to Richard Leman (she married Richard Leaman at the age of 27 in 1867 in Paddington London. However on James McLean Stewart's second marriage to Jane Fraser Dackers in 1898 in Perth he states his father to be James Stewart Mason deceased and his mother to be Catherine Stewart m/s McLean. However, I do not think that Catherine ever married a Stewart. James had at least six children with Annie and 2 with Jane - all brought up with the surname Stewart in Perthshire but I wonder how the name Stewart came into the family. Anyone have any ideas?

I am not a Stewart and hope there are no ancient animosities. We Maxwells(Caerlaverock) may have married a Stewart or two to improve the bloodline.

A very old Kilt (antique, though I have not ascertained th age)in the Royal Stewart Tartan has come into my possession. If an ancient Maxwell Kilt showed up I would lie to know so I thought someone here might like to examine a picture or two of it and I may be able to bring it to Northern Virginia for up close examination at the meeting of the Clans in December. This is a complete outfit with Prince Charlie Coatee and other accoutrements, but I will sell the kilt seperately if you like. It shows wear. But is well made and could be worn today. It is not fragile. It may need one strap. I am not sure. It is not built exactly like my kilt so far as fastenings are concerned. Pictures will tell the story.

Ask.

This letter was sent to my 4th Ggrand Father, in Washington CO, PA. We are trying to find the possible location from where it was sent. Balls more does not show up on any maps. We have heard by folklore it is in Ireland, but we have nothing to make the tie. We have run into brick wall as of where the Stuart/Stewart came from. John was a Blacksmith, and possibly arrived in the Americas in 1792, with a wife and 5 children. If you have any connections with the Marley’s Flack’s and or Stewart/Stuart’s please contact me. To All Stewarts:
We are in search of this family, John and Mary Stewart, with immigrated to the Americas in 1792 with five children, all said to have been born in Ireland. We have a very good family tree report of this family after arriving in the Americas, but very little information on them before coming to the Americas.

The only letter to Mr. John Stewart in America, Written from Ireland, Address not known, possibly “Ballsmore or Balliemore” but does not show up on any map. Was transposed from script as written and not sure of the meaning of all words. By Ms Carol Baker a Stewarts descendent from Washington Co, PA, Found in the box of papers located on John Stewart Farm Washington, PA. Name spelling in-consists are not uncommon to the date as most people were illiterate and used scribes to write letters ect. (Please do not correct) Address:

in about 1860 Col. Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich, visited the Stewart's in Glenfinglas by Callander Perthshire,he was recognised as the Clan chief, this was just prior to nearly the whole tribe emigrating to Canada Ontario, From early times the Stewarts in Glenfinglas had been tenants of the Earl's of Moray though they never looked upon the Earl as their Chief, it was as Tenants that they left Glenfinglas, anyone researching Stewart in the mid 1800's in Ontario? For those interested in lodging in Edinburgh during the 2003 Gathering, I can recommend the Ibis Hotel on Hunter Square for several reasons. #1 - It's affordable (basic, clean, but affordable), #2 - It's only a five-minute walk to Parliament House and lies in the centre of the Auld Toon and the Royal Mile, and #3 - You can crawl to over 50 restaurants and pubs, with everything from Thai to Indian to Spanish to Italian cuisine. The location is safe, quiet (for the Auld Toon), convenient (all major bus rotues pass nearby on the High Street). If you're interested in being frugal but comfortable, I recommend the Ibis. It's also only a 6-minute walk from Waverly train station---and from there you can take a train in 15 minutes to South Queensferry (although not that station's name) and it's 0.6 miles from the AGM site (cost £6 return).

Their son William, b. 1747 married Elspet Hutton. Their son John Stuart, b.1778 married Jane Scott and had seven children including William Stuart, born 1812. I am searching for a man named Kevin Stewart. He posted something about a common anscestor an the Clan Galbraith website and I (and other descendants) are trying to reach him.

Alexander Stewart of Ft. Stewart, County Donegal, Ireland was born 1703 and died 1743. His wife was Rebecca Galbraith. Alexander's father was Col. William Stewart, his grandfather Sir Thomas Stewart and his great grandfather Capt. William Stewart, all of Ft. Stewart, County Donegal. Kevin posted that Alexander had been murdered. In the hundreds of pages of history that we have on our ancestors, this was the first time we had ever heard this mentioned. If anyone has ever heard of this, please contact me.

Subject: Thomas Brown Phillips Stewart, 1865-1892

I should be interested to receive biographical and genealogical information about the above. He died at the age of 27. The death notice published in the Toronto Globe states that he was an only child and that "Both parents died years ago". A relative, Mr James McGee, 112 College Street, Toronto is mentioned. Stewart was a distinguished graduate of Toronto University whose bequest to the Law Society of Canada was instrumental in establishing the Osgoode Hall Law School Law Library now part of the University of Toronto. His name is remembered in the Thomas Brown Phillips Stewart Society of the University of Toronto. Information about the Stewart antecedents of this exceptional and tragic young man would be particularly valued.

Trying to find information about a DUNCAN STUART [b. 1625?] captured at the battle of DUNBAR and sent to America about 1650 along with his brother ALEXANDER. Alexander and Duncan were reputed to be the sons of Alexander, 4th of Invernahyle, but there is no proof of this.
Alexander, 4th of Invernahyle, d 1692, married a daughter of Duncan Stewart, 7th of Appin. Trying to find the name of this wife. Alexander Stuart was the son of Duncan, 3rd of Invernahyle, who was the son of Donald 1520-c1607, 2nd of Invernahyle and he was the son of Alexander, 1st of Invernahyle. Alexander was the fifth and youngest son of Alan Stewart, 3rd of Appin, d c1562.

DUNCAN STUART [b. abt 1625 in Scotland] married ANN Winchurst and settled in Rowley Mass. They had a son > SAMUEL STUART [b.abt 1669/73] and he settled in WELLS, MAINE. I am trying to find more about Samuel Stuart of Wells, Maine, USA. I believe I am descended from Samuels' son Joseph STUART [b. abt 1706] in Wells, MAINE.

Hello Stewart Families,

The following is an update to the Stewart/Stuart DNA Study that was started August 2002.

I have posted 3 new results on the website today:
www.angelfire.com/nb/stewartdna.

As I sit writing this email, I must confess that I was a little surprised
that my family did not match the Jacob Stewart Nancy (Britain) line from
Buncombe Co NC. These families traveled in the same counties for over 50
years, named their kids the same names (Jacob) and fought in the same Civil
War Units....in leadership together. I really thought they might match. I
wish we had these dna tests 20 years ago. It would have saved me a lot of
time and effort! I am disappointed and Inspired to go in other directions
at the same time!!

Depending on how long ago you looked at the STEWART?STUART DNA website, you
may see some changes on the results page. I have grouped the candidates
together who match the closest. I have also included the Atlantic Modal
Haplotype which is a fancy name for the most common set of numbers that have
been found in the European people tested so far. I included the haplotype as

a candidate because we have a good number of Stewarts who happen to match
it. Most of them match the HG1 set of numbers, so that is the one I
included. I have also changed the method for the yellow boxes. I mark every

box that does not match the Alantic Modal Haplotype. There is only one
purpose for that and it is to give your eyes an easy way to track who matches

and who doesn't. Look for the pattern of yellow boxes to see who matches.
Try reading this paragraph while you are looking at the results page and it
will probably make more sense.

We now have 31 participants in our STEWART/STUART DNA Study. I think that is

grand! Our first test was done in August, so I consider that to be pretty
good growth in 5 1/2 months.

Our newest results are from:
Jacob Stewart/Nancy Brittain line from Buncombe Co NC. #5813
John Stewart m Ann Haw of Amhurst VA, #5886
The Boone Stewarts #5603
John Stewart b in NY who married (Emily Cass from Philadelphia) #6267

We have two results just returned to the lab that will have results in about
4-6 weeks:
6865 Samuel and Lydia Stewart Rowan Co NC 1740's
6706 John Stewart of Fourth Creek

And we have 5 waiting for kits to be returned to the lab:
4439 Isaiah Stewart Anson Co NC
5989 John Stewart 1762 Dobbs Co NC Darlington SC
6018 William B. Stewart Anson Co NC
6733 James Stewart Yadkin/Caldwell/Cherokee Co NC
There are still lots of Stewarts out there that need a dna test! I would
love to find a descendant from the Thomas Stewart of Mecklenberg Co NC and
also from the Matthew Stewart of Mecklenberg Co NC. I am sure you all have
your list of who you would like to see tested also. Maybe a roll call of
prospective testees would be a good idea.

Still Scratching my Head,
Kathi

Stewart/Stuart DNA Reconstruction Project

Recently, several branches of Stewart families have grouped together to begin a DNA surname reconstruction project. The goal of our Stewart/Stuart Study is to find other Y-DNA fingerprint matches, and confirm lineage back to a common ancestor. The results of our present study can be found at www.angelfire.com/nb/stewartdna

To accomplish our goal we identified several members of one Stewart family branch and have had their DNA tested with a 25 marker test. We have a do***ented paper trail that identifies these three individuals as having a common ancestor 5 generations ago. The results of these 3 known related Stewart individuals have determined a genetic fingerprint for this individual family line of the Stewart surname

We then broadened our scope of testing to other Stewart branches who lived near this Stewart line in the North Carolina area. We have a total of about 20 participants in our study. They have lines going back to Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina Connecticut, England and other areas. The areas of ancestry of the participants are delineated on the web site.

We would like to further broaden our study to include Stewart family members from other parts of the United States and overseas. In other words, any Stewart who is male and carries the Stewart surname would be beneficial and welcome to participate in our study. Only males carry the Y-chromosome that is used in this particular type of testing. It is passed from father to son just like the surname.

A perfect match on the 25 marker test can prove commonality of an ancestor between 7 to 30 generations. Roughly that would be between the years 1400 and 1860. We felt that we should broaden our scope to beyond the shores of America as much immigration has occurred during that time span and we may find common ancestors in many places.

The company who is facilitating this study for us is Family Tree DNA. They are providing a discounted rate to us because of the size of our study. The 12 marker test is $99 and the 25 marker test is $169 with $2 for shipping. If these prices sound like a lot of money to you, just consider the money that you have spend driving to cemeteries, interviews, purchasing books/computers/software, joining societies and all the other necessities for a serious genealogist (not to mention your time) and if you are like me, this price begins to look like a bargain. You not only may find matches, but you will also be able to eliminate some of the lines that you have been suspicious may be yours and in reality are not.

I may be contacted at Bobbkat1@aol.com with any questions that are not answered at the website for those of you who are interested in becoming participants or recruiting others in your family to take the test.

MUNNSVILLE/PERRYVILLE, NEW YORK. I am unable to go back any further than my grandfather, Benjamin Stewart who abandoned my father and mother early on. I've heard different accounts that he was originally from MA,CT, or NJ. He did marry Ruth Cheesebro in Upstate NY and had Carroll Richard Stewart (my father)around 1924 when living in Munnsville NY. They later moved to a house in Perryville NY in Madison County in central New York, which is where I grew up until joining the military in 1975 at 17. Benjamin Stewart may have been around his family in MA,CT, NJ until he passed away in the 60-70's??? Can anybody help?

Further to my earlier message on 3 August, I have now discovered that my grandparents did not work at a hospital on Mull as I'd supposed. It seems that my grandmother Stewart left Coatbridge as a young woman to work as a nurse at the Argyll and Bute hospital at Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scotland, probably around 1912-13, before marrying and emigrating to Australia.

I'm seeking to found out which exact Stewart Clan I am descended from.My Great-Granparents names are Edward Alexander Stewart & Esther Sinclair. From what I'm told they were from New Jersey/USA. They had 3 children: Edward Alexander Jr, Dorothy, and Esther.
If anyone can tell me anything about Edward Stewart Sr.
or Esther Sinclair I would be eternally grateful. I've hit a dead end and would like to trace back to whoever immigrated to US. A family legend had us descended from the Royal line but from what I've read this is incorrect since that line had died out. Please
any information would be wonderful.

I was pleased to learn of the Stewart society and of their website. I am looking for information relating my great grand parents: John Stewart married Mary Craig (Stewart), their homeplace appears to have been Coatbridge, Scotland in the 1800s. The Craigs owned a dairy farm in the region, John Stewart was at first a miner, then shop owner/keeper before dying of TB. They had seven children. George and Alexander(Sandy)emigrated to USA as iron workers, Alex's son was Granger. Daughters Margaret Doyle (Stewart) emigrated to USA also. Janet, Jean, Anne, and Mary Craig Stewart, my grandmother, all emigrated to Australia. The family may have had some connections in the Hebrides as my grandmother Mary went to work on Mull, meeting my grandfather, John McKinnon there (early 1900s). Would anyone having a knowledge of possible lineages please leave a message.

Hi to everyone!-I have been trying to find out about a Coat of Arm's that is on a tombstone of Archibald Cousart(b.1747-d.1791)buried in the Waxhaw Cem.located 8 miles N.W.of Lancaster,Lancaster Co.S.C.son of Martha(Barkley)and Richard Cousart(b.1720-born at sea-parents unknown.)The Motto on it says"SOLA Juvat Virtus" meaning "Virtue Stand Alone"and I had found that it is a motto of the Stuart/Stewart.So TODAY I found this site and am so glad I found it.The Coat of Arms has two Standing Unicorns and a Red Stag head on top and a row of blue and white checks across and one narrow(2 rows of checks)running down across the shield right to left.Has a mullet(star shape)in the upper left side.Stamped on Archibald's tombstone was the letters R/S/B/W so a Cousar guy colored a picture for me on his computer using the colors.I can send anyone a copy of this if they want one.I have been to the page that has to Shield's on them and I will have to deciper all that BUT it looks like my Cousart line will come down thru the Earls of Menteth to the one of Carse. The FIRST "Cousar"that I have found was Johannis Cosour who's son?was Ade Cosours(Adam COUSAR??)ade Cosour was a massier to King David in the 1300's.I may be WAAAAY of base BUT this is the closest I have came !!-Love to hear from anyone on this Coat of Arm's and the Cousar/Cousart/Cowsar/Couser/Cousert/Cowser and Cowsert.Iam compiling data on the descendents of Martha (Barkley)and Richard Cousart(b.1720)and the descendents and they use all these names.Mine was Cousart/Cousar then COWSAR.G.Grandmother changed it and came to Texas WITHOUT G.Grandpa.--Sincerely yours m

THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me WILLIAM JOHNSTON STUART of 113 Gloucester Terrace Hyde Park in the County of Middle*** Esquire
I appoint my wife Rebecca Emily Stuart, James Fenning late of Lloyds in the City of London Esquire and William Whiting Wells of “The Elms” Sydenham Hill in the County of Surrey Esquire

to my niece Edith Wells the fourth daughter of the late John Wells of Yellicherry in the East Indies

my cousin Isabella Hunter Stewart of Eskgrove Musselburgh North Briton my broach containing the portrait of Mary Stuart (nee Bruce wife of Dugal Stuart a Lord of Sessions, Scotland known as Lord Blairhall by Zincke and I bequeath to my cousin Charles Stewart of Eskgrove

to my nephew John Wells (the only son of the said late John Wells) the sum of Three hundred pounds and to my godson William Dunkin Fenning (the son of the late George Fenning Esquire of Lloyds)

Stuart Henry Croaker, Charles William Croaker, William John Croaker, Bute Stuart Croaker, Frances Watkins Croaker and Susannah Lilias Walker the children of my sister Mary Jane Croaker, Alan Hickey the surviving child of my late sister Anne Amelia Hickey and Anne Jane Sophia Massy, Oscar Henry Massy, Gerald Murray Clark Massy, Glenville Massy, John Eyre Massy and Annie Stuart Donelly the surviving children of my sister Charlotte Renton Massy

The above contains details from a family will that my grandfather was a recipient (the child of Annie Amelia Hickey). William Johnston Stuart was the son of Dr. Bute Stuart who moved to Australia with his family.

The information contained in this will is really tantalising and it would lead us to believe that we are related to Dugal Stuart and Mary Bruce (mentioned in the broach). I am interested in trying to find out more about James of Blairhall succeeded 1712, died 1762 married Mary dau of David Crawford of Allantown and had issue 3 sons & 3 daughters.

Also John of Annefield, died 1760 married Anne dau of Francis, Earl of Moray and had 3 sons 5 daughters.

I want to beleive that they are a connection. Dr Bute Stuart was the youngest son of James of Blairhall (stated in his MD graduation in Edinburgh) I am thinking that Bute's grandfather might be a Dugal and one of the sons of James of Blairhall.

Can anyone give me any clues where to go next?

I have done some work on my father's family history , but I am looking for help to get further. My grand-father was William Christie Stuart. He was born in 1892 in Moncton New Brunswick Canada. He was married to Elizabeth Gray ( b.1887; d.1979; m. 1906) His father was Edward Staurt who was born abt. 1854 in Moncton and died in 1892. He was married to Katherine MacNeill ( b.abt.1861 ; d. 1933 ; m. 1882). His father was Walter Stuart. He was born in abt. 1788. The story goes that he was born in Scotland and came to Canada in the early 1800's. He is said to have settled in the Sus*** NB area. He married and had at least one child. It is also said that he left Sus*** when his wife died. He moved to the Moncton NB and married his second wife and had a second family ( my line). Most of what I have , prior to 1900 , has come from grave stones and press clippings. The province did not require registration of birhs and deaths until the late 1800's.
I am looking for anyone who may have a Walter Stuart in there family history whose birth matches what I have; and who came to Norht America in the early 1800's.
Thanks

From around 1950 onwards my grandfather has been very interested in tracing our family. He has had a lot of support and the results have been promising. Unfortunatly we have only managed to trace up to a William Stewart who was a miller at Miln Pitcairn. He had seven children,William (12/sept/1753), Janet (26/March/1757), David (26/jan/1759) Andrew (6/feb/1759) Alexander (29/11/1763), Maragaret (17/7/1765), which are no further traced, and John (5/July/1755)who is traced down to modern-day. This is ten generations and unfortunatly this is as far as we are able to get. If anyone has any information about any stewarts in Redgorton (perth) and in particular about William Stewart (the miller)or would like information about them, please feel free to contact me. My parents and other relatives have been working on their line for 30 years plus.
We have both spellings in our family. I am trying to contact across the oceans to Scotland, Ulster, Ireland and New Zealand and Australia.
My great grandfather Thomas Stewart came to USA via Canada, he worked his way down to kansas and kentucky and his bothers who crossed with him Archibald and Peter went to Australia and Archibald ended up in New Zealand and died in Wellington, New Zealand. Don't know if Peter stayed in New Zealand or went on to Australia. Archibald had no Children and Peter had two sons named G. A. stewart and David C. Stewart. Trying to track down the Parents of Thomas, Archibald, Peter and sister Susan in Scotland. They immigrated to US in approximately 1869. Don't know their names. Thomas immigrated about 1856.
The Stuart line came from John Stuart and his mother from possibly the Ulster area in Ireland as his mother(no name) inherited an estate in Ireland after they arrived in US. She would not go back. John Stuart married a Jane Elvira Williams and they had a number of children one of which was Sara Jane or Sarah Jane Stuart who married Thomas Stewart. Can elaborate more. Thomas and Sarah Jane Stewart married in Adair Co, Kentucky in 1867 and went to Minneappolis, Kansas to live and raise their children. Their children are as follows: Mary Elizabeth Stewart, Ida May Stewart, Susan Ellen Stewart, Charles Russell Stewart(my grandfather), Alice Myrtle Stewart, Jessie Maud Stewart, and David Lloyd Stewart. Can write more on John Stuart and Jane Elvira Williams later. Anyone with information is welcome to email me. I would really appreciate the help.
Sincerely

I am looking for information on the Appin Stewart Chief’s family. Specifically, the Ancestors and Stewart cousins of Duncan Stewart, Attorney General for Bermuda. Duncan’s son John Stewart (11.1.1822-16.11.1890) succeeded his cousin Charles, as the 13th Chief of Appin in 1882. In 1926, a family member of mine visited Duncan’s 6th Daughter, Frederica Harriet Papillion Leonard Stewart (5.11.1843-20.5.1933) in Bermuda at Craig Appin, Hamilton, Bermuda. There appears to have been a connection between our families. The family here in Canada brought their Appin Arms with them in 1816.

I think the family is related to Duncan Stewart. He may have been an uncle or cousin of my ancestor John Stewart who left Appin for Skye due to a feud or problem with a Campbell. In Ottawa his descendant, William Stewart MP, built a beautiful home in the soon to be Capital of Canada, Ottawa, ‘Appin House’. His grandson MacLeod Stewart later became Mayor of Ottawa. The family had lived on Skye for a period before coming to Canada. They were related to both the MacLeod and Morrison Clan Chiefs through marriage.

If anyone has notes on this branch of the Appin line, I would appreciate hearing from them.

Best regards, Randall Stewart

With regards to my husband's Stewart ancestry, I am at a complete loss and am hoping that someone here may be able to assist me further.

William B. Stewart, GG grandfather, was married to Janet/Jennet Simpson, daughter of Andrew Simpson and Jane Archibald.

William B. Stewart was a Blacksmith.

Information provided by Phyllis Locket (e-mail dated September 23, 2001). Phyllis lives in Delta, BC, south of Vancouver.

I also got a lead as to the birthplace of William B. Stewart.

His name was William Brown Stewart and he was from Ayrshire County, Scotland (born 16 Jan 1824).
His parents were William Stewart and Agnes Brown who apparently emigrated to Nova Scotia with their son, William and one other son, Thomas Stewart.

Can anyone verify so that I can take the lineage of William Stewart back further?

My husband also has a Christina Stewart (born about 1817 in the village of Erista, UIG parish, Isle of Lewis) married to a John McIver (s/o John McIver and Christiane MacAskill). Her parents are noted as Kenneth Stewart (Tacksman) and Mary Smith. Kenneth was born about 1781 and married Mary Smith (d/o Farquhar Smith and Margaret MacDonald) about 1805 in UIG parish, Isle of Lewis. He died before 1861 in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, Canada. If anyone can assist further with the lineage of Kenneth Stewart, it would be much appreciated.

Hello to all at the Stewart Society.

My name is Peter Stewart, and I wanted to inform you of the release this week of our family's Web site at www.ClanStewart.org .

Our family (some 240 of us!) is descended from a John Stewart (son of James Stewart & Janet Nicholson) of Isle of Skye born 1838 (probably Kirton, Raasay). John emigrated to Victoria, Australia in the 1850s.

Any information readers may shed of this end of the family would be most welcome. And, I invite anyone interested to check out the History section of our site in case any names ring a bell.

Best wishes, Peter Stewart.

I am researching my Stewart Lineage with earliest recorded ancestor being Robert Stewart b. 1655 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He married Jannett Forsyth and they had at least four children: John the eldest, Robert,my ancestor, Julyanne (Julia and Anne authors differ) and finally Samuel who remained in Ulster or Edinburgh...not clear about that. Robert died in Ulster and his wife Jannett and their children came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, NH and MA. She later migrated to western MA, while her son Robert's descendants went to VT until the late 1800's when some moved west to Iowa and MN. Any clues as to the parentage of this Robert would be greatly appreciated. Stewart Clan Magazine reports that his father was purported to be named Walter...no knowledge of his mother. If anyone knows of a reason why Appin Stewarts emigrated to MacLeod lands at this time, I'd appreciate the information. I have our oral history, but I'm open to more information.

For those who may have know Harriet Stewart MacKinnon, a long standing member, she passed away last year. I have taken over as our family's historian from her.

Margaret Forster MacFarland (widow of John MacFarland) February 17, 1803 in Erie, Pennsylvania, daughter of John Forster and Catherine ****ey (Margaret made the "Don't Give Up The Ship" flag for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812), d. March 06, 1838 in Erie, PA; Eleanor Donaldson, b. 1778, m. John Stewart, d. May 16, 1847 in Mill Creek, Erie County, PA; Charles, b. 1780, d. 1834 Florissant, Missouri (single). Archibald's land in Northumberland County later became part of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
Several accounts state that Archibald was a cousin or brother of Charles Stewart (sic) who was born 1743 in County Donegal, Ireland, and came to America in 1762 at the age of 19 to join his uncle, Samuel Hunter, near the present town of Harrisburg, Dauphin County (then Lancaster County), Pennsylvania. Charles married his cousin, Elizabeth Hunter about 1767. He bought land in ***berland County (he was a Revolutionary soldier in the ***berland County Militia), and later moved to Nippenose Township, Lycoming County, near Archibald. In the 1790 census, Charles Stuart (sic) is shown with 4 males over 16 years, 4 females, and 6 slaves. Archibald is listed with 3 males, 3 females, and 3 slaves.
Several incorrect DAR records indicate that this Archibald Steuart came to America from Ireland with two brothers, William and James, after 1758. They settled in Warren County, New Jersey near Hackettstown, where they founded the Hackettstown Presbyterian Church. Research proves that this Archibald Stuart remained in New Jersey and is buried there with his wife (not Jane Kirkpatrick). Therefore, he is not the Archibald Steuart of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania whose ancestry I seek.
A correct lineage for the Archibald Stuart and his cousin (?) Charles Stewart, who both died in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking the parents and other ancestors of Archibald Steuart (sic) born abt. 1737 in Ireland and died in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He married Jane Kirkpatrick February 20, 1759 in Old Swedes Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Archibald was either a cousin or brother of Charles Stewart who was born in 1743 in County Donegal, Ireland and came to America in 1762 at the age of 19 and joined his uncle, Samuel Hunter, who lived near the present town of Harrisburg, Dauphin County (then Lancaster County), Pennsylvania. Charles married his cousin, Mary Hunter about 1767. They later settled in Nippenose Township, Lycoming (then Northumberland) County, Pennsylvania. The census of 1790 for Northumberland County shows Charles Stuart (sic) with 4 males over 16, 4 females, and 6 slaves. Archibald and Jane Steuart settled nearby in the same county before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Charles died Sept. 25, 1809, aged 66, and Mary died March 22, 1813, aged 66. They were buried on their farm in a plot near the river in the vicinity of Jersey Shore, Pa. Charles was a Revolutionary soldier in the ***berland County. Archibald was a ranger in the Northumberland County militia during the Indian troubles. Archibald's children are: Jane b. 1762, m. John Maffet (Moffet); James, b. 1764, m. Mary Armstrong abt. 1794, daughter of Andrew Armstrong and Sophia. d. 1813; Matthew(Matthias) b. 1768, d. Urbana, Ohio; Archibald, b. 1770, d. 1831 Centre County, Pennsylvania; Andrew, b. 1774, d. February 15, 1850 Butler County, PA; Thomaas, b. 1776, d. March 06, 1838 Erie, PA; Eleanor Donaldson b. 1778, m. John Stewart, d. May 16, 1847 Mill Creek, Erie County, PA; Charles, b. 1780, d. 1834 Florissant,Missouri. One DAR record says that Archibald was born in County Ballintoy, Ireland and came to America from Ireland with two brothers, William and James, after 1758. They settled in Warren County, New Jersey near Hackettstown where they founded the Presbyterian Church. Research proves that this Archibald is not the Archibald in question, as he remained in New Jersey and is buried there with his wife (not Jane Kirkpatrick). A correct lineage of the aforesaid Archibald Steuart and Charles Stewart would be greatly appreciated.
